Concrete Silage Pits

Hanham Silage Pits are built on-site using a custom mould that joins each section of wall to the previous section, ensuring good seals. Hanham Silage pits can be made any size from 6m x 6m upwards.

Features and Benefits

  • Minimises waste and saves you money and time
  • No dirt or foreign matter is picked up from the ground when loading
  • Completely free-standing, eliminating the need for back-fill
  • Strong construction enables good compaction of silage to be achieved
  • Hanham concrete Silage pits are designed by a structural Engineer.

Testimonial

"Tom Mason is the Managing Director of a Dorie dairy farm which milks 1800 cows on 500 effective hectares producing 800,000 kg milksolids.

In 2008 Hanham Concrete Products were engaged to build a concrete silage bunker which is used to store grass and maize silage grown on the farm.

Grass silage is harvested by a contractor with a loader wagon when feed surpluses occur during the season. This is a very cost effective way of harvesting silage in relatively small quantities to maintain pasture quality. The cover pulled back, more silage added and then recovered as each lot of silage is harvested.

The bunker is open at both ends so that if there is some grass silage in it when the maize silage is harvested then the maize can be stored and fed out from one end and the grass silage from the other end.

The solid concrete walls are 2 metres tall and tapered. This allows excellent compaction of the silage. With good compaction, the cover with plenty of tires on it, and a well managed face when feeding out, we are getting high quality silage and wasting very little of it at the stack. We do not have issues with rotten or mouldy silage being fed to the cows or stones picked up when loading the wagon, and fed out on the paddocks.

Hanham Concrete Products did a good job building the silage bunker. The price was reasonable and we are getting a good payback from the investment."-Tom Mason
